🌿 Sharpening My Saw: The Story Behind Living Legacy™

Updated: 4 days ago

How one conversation sparked a framework built on clarity, confidence, and communication.

On December 3, 2023, I was facilitating a group in Arkansas. One conversation from that day has stayed with me ever since.

A young producer spoke passionately about his vision for the future — he could see it clearly, down to the smallest detail. But when I asked if his family shared that same vision, his expression changed.

He didn’t know. He didn’t know how to start that conversation.

And he didn’t know if his parents or siblings would even understand.

The room grew quiet. Everyone could feel the emotion in that space — the weight of generations working hard for the same land, yet struggling with clarity and communication about what comes next.

On the drive home, I kept replaying that story in my mind — thinking about how many families face that same silence, wanting to connect but unsure where to start.

I was reminded of a similar moment recently at a library in Mississippi, where an amazing woman shared her struggles in navigating generational expectations within her own family’s operation. Different places, different people, but the same challenge: a shared dream without a shared conversation.

Those moments lingered. They became the spark for deeper reflection — not about management plans or production goals, but about the people and relationships that make every plan work.

“He didn’t know how to start that conversation.”

🌾 From Conversations to Clarity

That day in Arkansas stayed with me .A few months later, in March 2024, I met the Soil to Profit cohort, and I began to see the same pattern repeat itself — passionate, capable people who knew what they wanted but struggled with how to get there together.

As a Holistic Management® Certified Educator, I’ve spent years teaching planning processes — financial, grazing, and land-based — that help producers care for the whole. But sitting with that cohort, I realized the real barriers weren’t in the plans themselves. They were in the clarity and communication between the people creating them.

I could feel how much potential was being lost in the space between good intentions and unspoken words.

That realization shifted something in me. It wasn’t enough to help families design better systems; I wanted to help them build the trust, shared understanding, and courage to use those systems together.

By June 2024, I started writing — quietly at first, jotting a few ideas on my phone when the day finally quieted down — trying to give form to what I was feeling.

That’s when the framework that would become Living Legacy™ began to take shape. I didn’t set out to build a program; I wanted to create something real — something that would inspire families and teams to talk, plan, and make decisions side by side. Honest conversations. Shared direction. A future built together, not apart.

🌿 The Framework That Grew from Real Life

As the months went on, the pieces started to come together. I’d notice something during a workshop or hear a story that resonated, and I’d capture the insight before it slipped away. Little by little, those moments formed a framework.

Each idea came from a real experience — a tough conversation, a breakthrough between generations, a story shared over coffee. I wasn’t trying to create a system; I was trying to put language to what I was seeing and feeling.

That’s how the Living Legacy™ pathway took shape:

Clarity Compass™ — helping families and teams align around values and direction.

CrewBridge™ — strengthening communication, trust, and clear roles.

90-Day Clarity Sprint — turning good intentions into steady habits.

The Steward’s Table — creating space for accountability and ongoing community.

These tools weren’t dreamed up in an office. They were built from the field — from honest conversations and hard-earned lessons — from people doing their best to care for land, family, and each other.

Living Legacy™ was never about launching a program. It became a bridge — connecting clarity with communication, values with vision, and people with purpose.

More than anything, I wanted families and teams to feel lighter — to have hope again. To see that clarity and communication could ease the tension, strengthen connection, and bring joy back into the work they love.

🌾 Seeing It in Action

Since those first notes in 2024, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside several families and teams as they’ve put the Living Legacy™ tools to work.

One woman I worked with had a clear vision for her farm — she knew what she wanted to build and why it mattered. But her family wasn’t on the same page, and that disconnect was weighing on everyone.

Through the Clarity Compass™ and CrewBridge™, we focused on creating space for honest conversations. Each family member began to recognize their strengths, their roles, and how they contributed to the bigger picture. Over time, that clarity and communication transformed their working relationships.

They didn’t just find alignment — they found respect and momentum. Today, they’re moving forward together with shared direction and renewed energy.

I’ve seen that same kind of breakthrough in my workshops — when the tension in a room eases and people start to really listen again. Those are the moments that remind me why I built this framework in the first place.

🌾 Sharpening My Saw

Late in 2024, I came to another realization. If I wanted Living Legacy™ to become what I truly envisioned, I had to sharpen my saw.

Even after years of facilitating workshops and creating educational materials, I knew there was more I could learn. I wanted more and better for the people I serve — the families and teams I hope to inspire and empower.

So I joined the Maxwell Leadership Certified Team, earning my certification in March 2025,

ree

and later became certified in Maxwell DISC Behavioral Analysis. Those experiences challenged and refined me. They gave me practical tools to understand how people communicate, what motivates them, and how leadership shows up in everyday decisions.

The Holistic Management framework has always been my foundation — it shaped how I see the land, relationships, and decision-making as one whole. But it was important to me to go deeper into the people side of the work. Adding leadership development and DISC filled that gap. It strengthened my ability to help families and teams connect more clearly, communicate more effectively, and lead with shared purpose.

That season reminded me that growth is stewardship too — caring for my own learning so I can better serve others.

🌿 Why It Matters

After all that growth, I’ll be honest — I put Living Legacy™ on hold for a bit.

I think sometimes when you pour your heart into something meaningful, it’s easy to second-guess it or wonder if it’s the right time. That pause gave me space to reflect — and it also reminded me how much this work matters.

ree

One day, I was sharing what I’d been working on — all my thoughts, half-finished outlines, and the pieces I was still sorting through — with a good friend. She listened for a while and then laughed and said, “Get your rear in gear and get it done.”

It was exactly what I needed to hear. Her encouragement — along with honest feedback — helped me refine the framework and finally move forward.

My family, mentors, and friends have also been part of this journey — listening, offering perspective, and reminding me that good work takes time and community. Their encouragement has been fuel to keep going.

Every piece of Living Legacy™ has grown from those relationships — from the conversations that spark clarity to the support that keeps the vision alive.

Today, I feel more grounded and grateful than ever for where this path has led. My goal has never changed: to INSPIRE clarity, confidence, and connection in the people who care for the land and each other.

Because in the end, a legacy isn’t something you leave behind — it’s something you live, every day.

Sometimes you just need a friend to say, “Get your rear in gear.” Living Legacy™ might have started as an idea, but it grew because of community, courage, and heart.
